Genre Conventions

The genre for our music video is indie. Indie music (from independent) is of any number of genre, scenes, subcultures and stylistic and cultural attributes, characterised by (real or perceived) independence from commercial pop music and mainstream culture and an autonomous, do-it-yourself (DIY) approach.

The term "indie" is often used to mean a sound that a musician presents, but when interpreted more literally, it is the way that sound is presented or made. "Indie" often refers to an artist or band that is not part of the mainstream culture and/or making music outside its influence. Though the sound of these bands may differ greatly, the "indie" definition comes from the do-it-yourself attitude and ability to work outside large corporations.

The conventions of a music video vary depending on genre of music. However, some general conventions are: The artist is shown performing, the lyrics of the song influence what is shown in the video, the pace of editing fits the pace of the music, and the codes of dress reflect the mood of the song.

For music video conventions in Indie; the video tends to be black and white, but not always. The artist/band is shown throughout the video and the use of extreme close up and long shots are used very often throughout.

The artist/band of indie music stereotypically they have a long sweep hair, they wear tones and not colour, wear skinny jeans, shirts, t-shirts and plain black or grey zip up hoody. Indie style is anything you like, as Indie is independent.

Indie music are often bands and artist, are mainly aimed at students, the social class hierarchy of E. The age range of 16 – 26. Their music have a nice beat to it, the band members often consist a drummer, guitarist, bass and a lead singer.

There are several subcategories indie music is often grouped broadly into. Indie rock and indie pop are the most common ones. The difference between these is difficult to pick up from the instrumentation or sound, as both genres include distorted guitar-based music based on pop-song conventions. If anything, the key distinction comes not from instrumentation or structure but from how strictly they follow cultural constructions of rockist "authenticity". There is also indie dance, which comes from a fusion of indie pop and electronic/dance music. Crossover between electronica (mostly glitch) resulted in so-called indietronic, electronic indie or indie electronic, for example some artists on the German Morr Music label, or The Postal Service. Another type is Post Rock, which includes bands like Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, or Sigur Rós. The idea behind Post Rock is that there are very few (if any) lyrics, yet the songs are long (sometimes upwards of 20 minutes), and the point of the songs are to paint an emotional landscape with just music and no words. Further expanding the original meaning of the term, when used in the independent sense, Blog-Rock has come to encapsulate the wave of upcoming artists in the mid-2000s.

In the United Kingdom during the 1950s and 1960s, the major record companies had so much power that independent labels struggled to become established. Several British producers and artists launched independent labels as outlets for their work and artists they liked, but the majority failed as commercial ventures or were swallowed up by the majors.

Indie pop is a genre of alternative rock music that originated in the United Kingdom in the mid 1980s, with its roots in the Scottish post-punk bands on the Postcar Records label in the early '80s, such as Orange Juice, Josef K and Aztec Camera, and the dominant UK independent band of the mid eighties, The Smiths While the term 'indie' had been used for some time to describe artists on independent labels (and the labels themselves).

In the mid to late 80s, indie pop was criticized for its tweeness and underachievement.
The birth of indie pop can be traced back to the post-punk explosion in small photocopied fanzines, and small shop-based record labels, for example, Glasgow's Postcard Records and London's Rough Trade Records.

In 2004 the UK focused Rough Trade Shops compilation Indiepop Vol 1 effectively documented the history of the sound acknowledging that it pre- and post-dated 1986.

In the mid-2000s, Sweden became a major exporter of indie pop with the such as Labrador Records and the success of indie pop artists from that country.

Storyboard

Narrative structure - our music video

The length of the song is 3:19. The lyrics consists 9 stanzas.

Protagonist : Main actor (Artist)
Antagonist: The sins he committed and the evil

Distruption: the main actor begins his journey (This disrups the equilibrium)

Quest: the main actor on his journey and seeking for forgiveness, due to the sins he committed

Revolution: the main actor make his journey and have been forgiven (This is the re-equilibrium)

The genre of the music video is in the area of alternative rock/new wave/indie. The theme for the narrative is religion.

We have decided that our music video will have a linear structure, therefore it will consists a beginning, middle and ending.

The narrative of our music video will be able a man going on a long journey (a pilgrimage, which takes place every October 4th), to ask for forgiveness due to the sins he committed.
The plan for this narrative is that the actor will be making a journey from Nogales to Magdalena. To make the music video more understanding to our audience, we have decided to use flashback of him committing the sins.

This is a Orpheus narrative - loss of something personal, due to the sins he have committed he has lost his sanity and family.

Art Clip

If a music video clip contains no perceptible visual narrative and contain no lip synchronized. Singing then it is a pure art clip. Abstract/contemporary.

Performance Clip

If a music video clip contains mostly filmed performance then it is a performance clip. A performance clip is a video that shows the vocalist(s) in one or more settings

Common places to perform are the recording studio and the rehearsal room. But the performance can take place anywhere, from the bath tub to the outer space. Walking down the street is another performance dinché, which is common to rap videos

The performance can be of three types

  • song performance, dance performance
  • instrumental performance - almost every music video include song performance
  • some video combines song and dance performances

Narrative Clip

If a music video is most appropriately understood as a short silent movie to a musical background, it is a narrative clip. A narrative clip contains a visual story that is easy to follow. A pure narrative clip contains no-lip synchronized singing.

Rules of Narrative

Narrative Theory

Candidle - Hero can not be put down. E.g. James Bond

Cinderella - Dreams come true

Circe - The chase, the spider on the wall, innocent & victim

The Princess & her Farther - gives the task to the hero, identify false hero, marries, often sought for during the narrative

The Dispatcher - character who makes the lack known and sends the hero off

The Hero or Victim/Seeker Hero - reacts to the donor, weds the princess

[False Hero] - takes credit for the heros actions or tries to marry the princess

Music video - audio visual poetry?

Plans

Sophie Carter and Jared Cost will be working on wit the storyboard whilst Me (Sophie Li) and Andy Hones will be getting on with test shoot.

Each of us will create a list for the project
Me - cast list
Sophie - location list
Andy - costume list
Jared - prop list

Our music video requires filming in a church. When we when to do research and take location shots, we came in contact with the Farther (Farther.A.Paul.Smith). He gave us permission to film in the church. He gave us his name card, in order to for us to contact him before going to film. In case there's an event happening at the church at the time.

We have all taken a sheet of lyrics home to annotate each stanza, to put forward our own ideas. Afterward we will show our ideas to each other, discuss and pick out the best ideas from each individual sheet and put it on master sheet (to make a master copy). This shows that we've all contribute to this.
